Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Junior Team Pickleball?

Junior Team Pickleball (JTP) is a coeducational and skill-based program designed to give children the opportunity to compete against peers of similar age and ability levels. Organized by the Tennessee Junior Pickleball Association, JTP promotes fun, inclusivity, and healthy competition through a season of match play. It’s a great way for kids to improve their pickleball skills in a structured environment while enjoying the game with friends.

  • Who organizes Junior Team Pickleball?

JTP is organized by the Tennessee Junior Pickleball Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing youth pickleball in Tennessee. We work closely with public parks, schools, and churches to offer competitive and fun opportunities for young players, but we are not affiliated with any specific parks and recreation program.

  • How does the season work?

The length of the season depends on the number of teams, court availability, and the skill levels of the players. Teams compete in a series of matches throughout the season, which contributes to the overall standings. Each match consists of six singles and three doubles games, played best two out of three games to 15 points.

  • Where do practices and matches take place?

Matches and practices are held at public parks, schools, or churches. In Memphis, dedicated host sites include Bluff City Pickleball in Bartlett and Pickleball 901 in Collierville. Teams may also arrange to use school or church facilities. Public parks require prior authorization to be used as venues.

  • How can we make Junior Team Pickleball fun for kids?

We encourage teams to come up with fun team names, design logos, and create t-shirts to build team spirit. We also offer the help of graphic artists to bring your team’s designs to life. The goal is to create an enjoyable and memorable experience for every participant!

  • What is the registration fee and what does it cover?

The registration fee is $50 per player/season and covers administrative costs, match coordination, and other expenses involved in running a league. Additional costs for a team may include t-shirts or custom team apparel, as well as minimal court usage fees that may be associated with venues.

  • What age groups can participate in Junior Team Pickleball?

Junior Team Pickleball is open to children aged 12 to 18. We group players based on both age and skill level to ensure fair and competitive matches for everyone. Specific divisions will be outlined once teams are formed and registration is complete—we currently have 18&U and 14&U but will be adding more divisions are we grow.

  • Does my child need prior pickleball experience to join?

While Junior Team Pickleball welcomes players of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced, an understanding of the rudiments of playing and keeping score are strongly encouraged. Teams are formed to match players with similar abilities, so everyone can enjoy the competition and learn at their own pace.

  • Can siblings or friends be on the same team?

Yes, we try to accommodate requests for siblings or friends to be on the same team when possible. During registration, you can indicate any preferences, and we’ll do our best to honor them, though placement may depend on age and skill level.

  • What safety measures are in place for players?

The safety of all players is our top priority. Coaches are background-checked, and venues follow safety guidelines to ensure a secure environment. In addition, players are expected to wear appropriate gear, such as non-slip athletic shoes, and coaches are trained to supervise and provide first aid if necessary.

  • Do I need to purchase any equipment for my child?

Players will need a pickleball paddle, appropriate athletic shoes, and comfortable sportswear. Balls and nets will be provided at matches and practice venues. If you need help purchasing equipment, we can recommend affordable options or provide assistance.

  • How are teams formed?

Teams are generally formed by coaches, based on the player’s age and skill level. Coaches are encouraged to recruit players from their schools, churches, or local communities. If you don’t have a team or coach yet, you can register as an individual, and we’ll help place your child on a suitable team.

  • How much time is required each week for practice and matches?

The time commitment varies based on the team, but typically teams practice once or twice a week, with matches scheduled on weekends or late afternoons. Practices and matches usually last between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on availability and age groups.

  • How are match results and standings tracked?

Coaches report match results within 24 hours, and the results are compiled to track team standings. Standings will be regularly updated and available for parents and players to view through our online platform, which is currently being developed.

  • What is the role of parents during matches and practices?

If not coaching, parents are encouraged to support their child’s team by attending matches and cheering them on in a positive manner. Parents can also assist coaches with practice coordination or serve as team managers if desired. We encourage active, supportive participation from all parents.

  • Will my child receive any awards or recognition?

In April 2025, after the Tennessee Junior Pickleball Association Championship concludes,  we celebrate all participants at a banquet with awards based on effort, sportsmanship, and performance. Some teams may also host their own end-of-season celebrations or to recognize players.

  • What if my child has a schedule conflict with a match or practice?

We understand that scheduling conflicts happen. If your child needs to miss a match or practice, simply notify the coach as early as possible. Coaches will try to accommodate scheduling changes, and practices can be flexible depending on team availability.

  • Is there a tryout process?

There are no formal tryouts for Junior Team Pickleball at present. Players of all abilities are welcome, and teams are formed to ensure balance in skill levels. However, as competition increases at advanced levels, some teams may conduct evaluations to ensure players are placed in appropriate divisions.

  • What should I expect from my child’s pickleball experience?

You can expect your child to have fun, make new friends, and develop valuable life skills like teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. Our goal is for every player to improve their pickleball skills while enjoying a positive, supportive environment.

  • What happens if a match or practice is canceled due to weather?

In case of rain or severe weather, outdoor matches and practices will be rescheduled. Coaches will notify players and parents as soon as possible and provide alternative dates or indoor venues when available.

  • Who can coach a Junior Team Pickleball team?

Parents, teachers, and volunteers are encouraged to coach teams. Based on the successful model of Junior Team Tennis, parents are often the heart of our program. We believe that with the proper support and guidance, anyone with a passion for helping kids succeed can be a great coach. All coaches must pass a background check and receive training on their responsibilities. Because we are very particular about our coaches, we reserve the right to reject any coaching application.

  • What are the responsibilities of a coach?

As a coach, your primary responsibility is to create a safe and enjoyable environment for all players. Responsibilities include recruiting players, organizing team practices and matches, managing registration, and securing a venue for practices and matches. Coaches are also expected to report scores within 24 hours of match completion.

  • What makes a good coach?

Good coaches have a heart for kids and may not even have pickleball or coaching experience but are good at organizing, teaching, motivating, and exciting young players to be the best version of themselves, both on and off the court.

  • Can I coach more than one team?

Yes, you are welcome to coach more than one team, though managing schedules and practices for multiple teams may require careful planning. We can assist you in balancing these responsibilities.

  • What if I need help securing equipment for my team?
